In NYC, thousands of immigrant women of color home care workers are forced to work inhumane 24-hour shifts caring for sick, disabled, and elderly individuals. They are robbed of 11 hours of pay every night by health insurance companies and home care agencies. Intro 175, a bill presented by Council member Chris Marte, a bill with 37 sponsors, would end 24-hour shifts while maintaining 24-hour care for patients. Intro 175 has a majority of bipartisan support in the City Council. Still, Speaker Adams refuses to bring the bill to a vote. Latina, Asian, and Black, home care workers are challenging Speaker Adams, the first African-American woman to lead the New York City Council, to schedule a vote for Intro 175. So why is she allowing the exploitation and abuse of women by not allowing a vote? The workers invite all New Yorkers to join them at a rally at City Hall on Wednesday, April 12th at noon, demanding Speaker Adams bring the No More 24 Act (Intro 175) to a vote. NYC must end this injustice as the only city in the country to promote state-sanctioned 24-hour workdays for women of color.
Please call Speaker Adams at 212-482-6731 and tell her that you want her to put (Intro 175) out for a vote now.
