Thousands of immigrant women of color who work as home care providers in NYC are subjected to inhumane 24-hour shifts while caring for the sick, disabled, and elderly. Despite providing round-the-clock care, these workers are robbed of 11 hours of pay each night by home care agencies and health insurance companies. Council member Chris Marte introduced Intro 175, a bill with 37 sponsors, which would end 24-hour shifts while ensuring uninterrupted care for patients. Despite having majority bipartisan support in the City Council, Speaker Adams refuses to bring Intro 175 to a vote. In response, Latina, Asian, and Black home care workers are challenging Speaker Adams to schedule a vote for the bill. As the first African-American woman to lead the New York City Council, why is Speaker Adams allowing the exploitation and abuse of women by not allowing a vote? It’s essential to end the injustice of promoting state-sanctioned 24-hour workdays for women of color, making NYC the only city in the country to do so.
To add your voice, please call Speaker Adrienne Adams at 212-482-6731 and demand she bring Intro 175 to a vote now. And also please sign our petition to the United Nations to declare 24-hour workday as a crime against humanity, and denounce Speaker Adams as the face and main perpetrator of the crime! We ask the international communities to condemn and call for an end to 24-hour workday!
